Its always great to spend a few days alongs the “Mainschleife” in Franconia.
The city Würzburg belongs to Bavaria. Located on the Main River, it is the capital of the Regierungsbezirk Lower Franconia.
During our road trip through the region we had a couple of lovely wine tastings starting at the historic wineyard Max Müller I. in Volkach.

The favourite wine is Silvaner. Typically, Franken wine comes in the distinctive Franken “Bocksbeutel” wine bottles. The bottle’s unusual shape dates back to at least the 16th century.

The Bocksbeutel may only be used for Franken wines. In Germany, it is a sign of excellence.

Weingut Juliusspital is Germany’s second largest winery with 177 hectares under vines in the most renowned sites of Franken, and one of the always top rated wineries. Weingut Juliusspital is a member of the VDP – the association of about 200 German elite winemakers. It is so nice to stroll along the wineyard “Würzburger Stein”.

The hotel is more than 600 years old and has a long history.

In the Middle Ages the building was in the property of a respectable Patrician family called ‘vom Rebstock’. In a sales certificate dated March 28th, 1408, Kunz Seyde is mentioned as the owner, who ran the Rebstock as a tavern and sold it to the ‘Engelgarten’.

During council minutes of the 15th century the Rebstock was a location for dinners took place and it was also mentioned as a hostel.

In 1737 the Counsellor of the Exchequer Anton Rossat (+1741) acquired the estate. Thereby the building became one of the main monuments of the bourgeois rococo in Franconia.

In 1792 the prince-bishop’s chamberlain, Count of Sickingen-Hohenburg (+1796), bought the building.

In 1881 the vineyard owner Josef Brennfleck bought the tavern for 106.000 Goldmarks. The property belonged to this family until it was sold to the Edeka Company in 1956. In 1912 and 1936 the rococo façade was thoroughly restored.

Probably the worst day of the city’s history was March 16th, 1945 when the historic city was attacked by aircraft bombs of the British airforce. The fire also destroyed the building of today’s Hotel Rebstock.

In 1951 the remaining façade was secured. In 1968 the rebuilding of the house by the architect’s enterprise ‘J.W.Mengler’ from Darmstadt, which included the accurate reconstruction of the rococo façade of 1740, was started.

In May 1970 the Rebstock was reopened as a hotel. In 1977 it came into the possession of the hotelier family Unckell.

Only two years later the four-star hotel joined ‘Best Western’, the world’s largest hotel chain. In 1994 Christoph Unckell took over the property from his parents and is since then successfully running it in second generation.

It belongs to the top category ‘Best Western Premier’ and is one of the ten hotels in Germany first certified according to this standard.

The famous Michelin star restaurant Kuno is located in the hotel.
