Grand Hotel Union Different old warm charm experience / Ljubljana / Slovenia

Categories Destinations, Hotels2 Comments

The Grand Hotel Union has probably the best location in town, just @ the main square. The exterior and interiors both included old-world charm. Differnet strokes for differnet folks, it’s always interesting to stay in a hotel of historical significance.

The city is a perfect blend of museums, art galleries and open-air markets, with a castle-on-a-hill, and some very pretty churches like the beautiful Annunciation church, just 50 meters away from the hotel.
The original was completed in 1905. Grand it is, softened with Art Nouveau touches in the form of decorative stuccoes and etched glass. The refurbishment accentuated the hotel’s original appearance and layout. Rooms and bathrooms are a good size, with extremely comfortable beds. Views from the upper 7,8 and 9th floor look over to the castle hill. I checked in at room 812 and had a big balcony, not very modern but with a certain charme.

The breakfast was nice with a wide range of fresh local and international options and a nice cappucino. You could order a la carte food and drinks from the kitchen as well with no extra charge.

I liked this hotel because it retains the look and feel of a bygone age, you get a bit of old fashioned style, think about Agatha Christie, Poirot and the roaring twenties, perhaps a bit of Tito.
Josip Broz Tito was “the” Yugoslav statesman, serving in various roles from 1943 until his death in 1980.[8] During World War II he was the leader of the Partisans, often regarded as the most effective resistance movement in occupied Europe.

Back to the Grand Hotel, the charm inside and out make the hotel my place to stay.

Things to see, the people of Ljubljana. They are a delight you will meet them in river bordered bars, bistros and coffee shops. Furthermore the city offers nice museums, galleries, open-air market, castle-on-a-hill, some very pretty churches. Everything is within easy walking distance of everything else. Much of the centre is pedestrianised, and there is room to move, breathe, browse, especially in January.

I enjoyed it and would recommend staying here if you go to Ljubljana, especially when you want a centrally located, classy hotel to enjoy this charming beautiful town.
